Getting dumped is an inevitable result of being a human being, irritatingly cursed with a powerful thing called feelings. But the fact that everyone has experienced crippling heartbreak never makes you feel any better at all. In fact, anyone who has ever found themselves at the end of a relationship that they wanted to remain in knows that two phenomenons occur. Firstly, you’re absolutely convinced that no one has ever faced the same level of mental anguish before, and secondly, you believe with all of your heart that your relationship was just that bit more special than everyone else’s.
In the post-breakup days, it may feel as if you’ve encountered phantom limb syndrome. I mean, when you get so attached to another human being that you’ve learnt every quirk and eccentricity. As well as spending months – or even years – listening to and watching their aspirations unfold, it does make sense that something would feel as if it were, well, missing.
So we cry and we pray and we beg and end up resembling none other than the queen of heartbreaks: Bridget Jones. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the canonical character, just know that it involves a healthy concoction of denial, booze, food and anger. Sounds about correct, right?
So let’s take a trip down memory lane and remind ourselves of all the terrible things we went through after someone stamped all over our hearts…
1. It becomes impossible to cut off contact
2. No really, you will do anything that could possibly give you a chance at getting him/her back
3. You go through the seven stages of grief: alcohol, alcohol, alcohol, alcohol, alcohol, alcohol and alcohol
4. But it doesn’t just end there, as chocolate and ice-cream help heal the heart too, right?
5. You desperately try to get rid of every reminder you have of That Person
