For many of us, access to clean water is a no-brainer. It comes out of our taps or is contained in handy bottles that we can buy at will. Sadly, this is not the case for millions around the world, and a big part of the problem is caused by developing countries. According to Unesco, more than 80% of sewage in developing countries is discharged untreated, and this waste goes on to pollute rivers, lakes and coastal areas. Water Aid also lists the following shocking figures on its website.
The charity estimates that 31% of schools across the world do not have clean water, which is a huge concern as WHO lists unclean water as one of the major contributors to preventable deaths caused by living in an unhealthy environment. Nearly one in four global deaths in 2012 – an estimated 12.6 million people – were attributed to living or working in unhealthy conditions, including lacking access to clean water. If those figures aren’t shocking enough, Water Aid also states that providing everyone in the world with clean water could reduce deaths resulting from diarrhea by 34%.
There is clearly a serious problem with the state of water in many parts of the world which needs to be publicised and addressed. Three art students from Taiwan responded to this through a unique project. They decided to comment on water pollution and the state of the environment by creating a unique display of popsicles.
