14 of the Most Bizarre Reasons Murderers Gave for Killing Someone

What’s a good reason to murder someone? Being a pacifist I’ve never really seen any significant enough reason to take make someone pay the ultimate price, but clearly many individuals in this world just don’t seem to agree with me. Yet, while most of the time the decision to kill comes hand-in-hand with a bad upbringing, murderers sometimes come up with the nonsensical reasons. Or perhaps they just don’t always fess up to their true motives straight away.

Either way, imagine brutally killing someone every time the person in front of you began to text in movie theatre, or think of  assassinating your mother because she refused to buy to concert tickets for your favourite band. How about if you just, like the rest of us, really hated Mondays and wanted someone to take it out on? As outrageous as all of these rationales sound, they are genuine reasons that killers have given for homicide in the past.

1. She didn’t like Mondays

In 1979, 16-year-old Brenda Spencer killed two people and wounded nine others when she fired on San Diego’s Grover Cleveland Elementary School with a rifle from her family’s house across the street. When asked by a reporter why she did it, she allegedly told him “I don’t like Mondays”. Her comments inspired the song, I Don’t Like Mondays by The Boomtown Rats

2. He wanted control of the TV remote

A 13-year-old boy allegedly shot his 17-year-old sister in the face after they fought about the television remote in the Omsk region village of Zhukovka, Siberia

3. A man was texting at a movie theatre

Curtis Reeves was at a movie theatre in 2014, when Chad Oulson, who was sitting in front of him, began to text. When he asked them to stop, Oulson refused, saying he was communicating with his daughter’s babysitter. The fight escalated and came to blows when Oulson threw a bag of popcorn at Reeves. Reeves then pulled out a shotgun, killing him and shooting his wife in the hand

4. He wanted to impress Jodie Foster

61-year-old attempted to assassinate President Ronald Regan in 1981 when he shot him in the chest while he was leaving a speaking engagement in Washington D.C. Hinckley Jr had developed an obsession with actress Jodie Foster and claimed he wanted to impress her

5. She was addicted to shopping

Dana Sue Gray killed three elderly women in 1994 and stole their credit cards, then went on massive shopping sprees. She told police she committed the murders to fund her overwhelming need to shop
