The emollient pool of celebrity serves several purposes in our modern culture. To some, a distraction from the trials and tribulations of our own lives, to others a crystallized illustration of just how vapid, vacuous and cosmetic our society has become, the concept of celebrity at once confounds and repels us.

In a filtered world of keenly documented Instagram lives, where photos are edited almost beyond recognition and those who abstain from posting are considered obsolete by their social counterparts it is, perhaps, unsurprising that fame has come to govern much of our existence.

We hang on the every word of those aspirational figures that we so admire, relentless in our pursuit to closely mirror their behaviours and appearance – a pursuit that, it must be said, is typically carried out in vain.

Regardless, it is always worth indulging in some juicy celebrity gossip, particularly when the two parties involved are so famous and – even more seductively – were once romantically involved. What with all the existential crises and shock Presidential victories that have dominated news headlines in 2017, it is easy to forget that Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris were once an item.

For a time, they were the veritable personification of hashtag couple goals, though, as with all good things, it came to a Swift end. That’s when the Trouble started.
