Steve Irwin Finally Gets a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Most people know for a fact that Australia’s biosphere is absolutely festooned with deadly animals; creatures with stingers, critter with teeth or jaws that could snap the bones of your arm like a matchstick. Venomous spiders, gigantic bats, mile-long snakes and legions of other creepy-crawlies; the list goes on.

And how are all non-Australians aware of this? Because we’ve seen at least one rerun of the nature documentary series The Crocodile Hunter, and have seen the late, great Steve Irwin wrestle and subdue nearly every single example of these species. The guy had serious stones.

It’s safe to say that Irwin has been sorely missed on TV. In life, Irwin was known for his charismatic screen presence, doe-eyed enthusiasm, and incredible bravery. He was well known worldwide for his feats of derring-do, as well as his conservation work and love of the natural world.

Sadly, Irwin passed away on September 4, 2006, after being lethally stung through the heart by the barb of a stingray while filming an underwater documentary film titled Ocean’s Deadliest. In the wake of his death, his fans were left inconsolable, and even those Australians who’d considered him to be OTT and stereotypical were moved by his unfortunate demise.

Thankfully, Irwin’s legacy remains strong, and the family he left behind has done much to preserve his work. His wife Terri, who often served as his sidekick on Crocodile Hunter, created the Steve Irwin Foundation. Irwin’s son Robert has appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s show, and his daughter Bindi is an animal activist in her own right. But now, more than a decade after his death, Irwin is about to receive some long-overdue credit for his work.
