Although the concept of laughter is pretty much universal in human existence, everyone has a different standard for what makes them laugh. I, for example, have a huge penchant for puns, but every such joke I make with the people I hold dearest is met only by groans. Shock humour, popularised by the likes of Family Guy and comedian Andrew Dice Clay, uses gross irreverence and toilet humour to mine for laughs, but there are many instances in which shock humour goes way too far.
Based in Paris, France, the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo are perhaps best remembered for the “Je Suis Charlie” movement, after a cover featuring the Prophet Muhammad in January 2015 led to their office being attacked by Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, killing 12 people and injuring 11 others. Now, the controversial newspaper is back in the headlines once more, as a cover featuring a prominent political figure has caused outrage around the world.
