When a show is as popular as Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black is, you keep getting renewed for new seasons and end up with a multitude of episodes at your disposal. By time you get to the fifth season, as this prison drama has, you have the time to dig deep into your characters.

The show has a large cast of characters, all from different backgrounds, and with a variety of motivations and traits. As a viewer, you start to want to know about the past lives of characters once you’ve spent enough time with them. Flashbacks are the easiest ways to do this, and can give us unique insight into what made these women who they are today.

But once the writing is done, they are left with the difficult problem of who to cast. Depending on how far you go back, it won’t be believable to cast the same actress as her younger self. So what do you do? You have to find the perfect person to fill the shoes of the beloved character while still looking like them.
