If the first day of college is a momentous day for the bright young thing who is faced with the exciting prospect, it is equally poignant for proud parents, as they stand, misty-eyed, proudly waving off their son or daughter.

The culmination of years of hard work, college is the ultimate affirmation of one’s commitment to education. Of course, when you get there, other pressing issues like socialising and basking in your new found freedom also arise. But for many that first day away from home can be a tough one.

Though one might not care to admit it, it is difficult not to feel a pang of sadness as you wave goodbye to the parents that have raised you, however excited you might be about the prospects that lie ahead. It is, of course, a similarly emotional day for mom and dad. They too are experiencing a freedom they haven’t felt for some years, and the possibilities of said liberty are endless; a wine tour of France, perhaps, maybe a still-life painting course, the world truly is their oyster.

One mom, though, took a rather different approach; less a dip-of-the-toe into the ocean of independence, more a dive from a 10m platform.
