30 Jul Wiz Khalifa Just Said The Dumbest Thing Of 2018 And People Are Not Happy About It

Plenty of celebrities seem to have kept themselves in the news by making dumb statements. Intentional or not, silly or sometimes offensive remarks have kept celebs relevant and, in some cases, have become what they are best known for.

Case in point, when you think of Jessica Simpson, many people will immediately remember her questioning whether Chicken of the Sea brand tuna was chicken or fish. Perhaps more detrimental to their careers were racist and offensive statements made by designer John Galliano, Roseanne Barr, and Michael Richards.

Now, Wiz Khalifa has said something that is perhaps the dumbest thing any celebrity has said this year and people are not happy about it. In fact, it has to do with bananas and even a simple conversation about fruit has managed to offend a lot of his fans.

Khalifa burst onto the international rap scene in 2011 with his single ‘Black and Yellow’ but hasn’t really done too much else music-wise since. His relationship with Amber Rose kept him in the news until their split in 2016, but he has never managed to achieve the same success that ‘Black and Yellow’ initially brought him.

He has now released a new album called Rolling Papers 2, so perhaps we’ll get a new hit single from it, but in the meantime, he appeared on The Breakfast Club to promote the album and let his fans know what he has been up to.

The interview started innocently enough, with Khalifa letting everyone know that he’s been busy getting into shape. The rapper who had previously been known to smoke a lot of marijuana and kept a slender waif-like frame has recently bulked up and left much of the party lifestyle behind.

He has now become intensely involved in MMA and Muay Thai and devotes much of his time to that these days. “It’s a good release, it helps me clear my mind. The whole fight community, they’re really welcoming,” he said.

“I train 5 days a week and you don’t want to be hungover, so I only drink a little bit now,” Khalifa added. Of course, host Charlamagne Tha God then asked Khalifa about his diet and that’s when the interview took a turn for the worst.

The conversation turned to fruit, specifically bananas, and Khalifa said, “If you bite a banana, you sus. N***as gotta break the banana in half.” After the host asked for clarification, he added, “You gotta break it in pieces, bro.”

What’s worse, later in the show, Khalifa was asked what advice he would give to a girl and he responded with the following: “Watch these n****s that don’t be eatin’ a banana the right way.”

The remarks were blatantly homophobic and suggested that straight men don’t eat bananas unless they are cut up. Immediately, the backlash began with the internet pointing out how fragile Khalifa’s masculinity must be to have such beliefs about how a piece of fruit must be eaten.

It makes me wonder if he feels the same way about popsicles, lollipops, cucumbers, sausages, corn dogs, and really just hot dogs in general. Does he become homophobic around any object that is vaguely phallic-shaped or is his discomfort strictly tied to bananas?

Would Khalifa likewise believe that women who are homophobic or who are not secure in their sexuality should be uncomfortable around tulips? It also brings up a lot of questions around locker room etiquette, but I’ll leave further questioning to your own imaginations.

The Breakfast Club then ran an online poll asking its listeners to weigh in on whether or not there were separate banana eating rules for men and women. Overwhelmingly, the internet said no, there were not.

Online commenters pointed out that Khalifa is a grown man and a father, and that this type of behavior seemed immature. Others claimed he is the perfect example of toxic masculinity at work.

This isn’t the first time Khalifa has made offensive statements publically. Previously, The Korea Times accused him of being racist after his song ‘Hot Now’, which is on his latest album, reportedly has lyrics that include “Smoke got my eyes lookin’ Korean.”

In response, Khalifa told The Breakfast Club, “Chill out, I’m not racist. I love all races. I have Korean friends who are not offended, so I don’t know those people who are saying that. My art is up for interpretation.”

Well, at least Khalifa has got his name back in the news while promoting his new album. Too bad it’s for all the wrong reasons. Perhaps, if you’re attending a Wiz Khalifa concert in the future, bring a banana or two and see what happens.

It’s only a piece of fruit, after all, enjoyed by gay and straight people alike, just as all music should be as well.
