A 12-Year-Old Prince William Made One Very Heartbreaking Promise To His Mom After She Divorced Prince Charles

In the last few months, the British Royal Family has been at the center of the world’s attention a great deal more than they had been in recent years.

Soon after Prince William and Kate Middleton introduced their third child, Louis Arthur Charles, to the world, Prince Harry and his beautiful bride, American actress Meghan Markle, got married in a stunning ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Naturally, it was very important to both Prince Harry and his bride that his mother, the late Princess Diana, would be a part of the ceremony in some way.

Her memory was already very lovingly incorporated into the engagement period, as the ring Prince Harry used to propose, which he designed himself, included two diamond’s from her personal collection.

Of course, there was no doubt about the fact that Prince Harry would include a tribute to his mother during the actual wedding ceremony, and that he certainly did.

He chose to include the hymn ‘Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer’, which was incredibly special for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was Diana’s favorite, and because of this, it was performed at her funeral 20 years ago.

Watch as Prince Harry sings the hymn at the ceremony, clearly overcome with emotion:

When Princess Diana died in a car crash, her passing sent shockwaves around the world. We simply couldn’t fathom the idea that we had lost such a beautiful soul.

Left behind – aside from her incredible, long-lasting legacy – were her two sons, William and Harry. William was just 15 years old at the time of the tragedy and his younger brother, Harry was 12.

Both princes remember the very last conversation they had with their mother. Just last year, Prince William revealed that the final conversation he had with her was on the phone. He recalled how he had tried to speed up the conversation because he wanted continue playing around with his cousins.

“Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know, ‘see you later’. If I’d known what was going to happen, I wouldn’t have been so blasé about it and everything else. But that phone call sticks in my mind, quite heavily,” Prince William revealed.

Prince Harry also remembers their final phone call quite vividly. “It was her speaking from Paris. I can’t really remember what I said, but all I do remember is probably regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was,” Prince Harry said.

“Looking back on it now, it’s incredibly hard. I’ll have to sort of deal with that for the rest of my life. Not knowing that was the last time I was going to speak to my mom. How differently that conversation would have panned out if I’d had even the slightest inkling her life was going to be taken that night.”

Princess Diana was only 36 years old when she died but she still managed to make a phenomenal impact on her sons but also on practically the entire world.

Following her formal separation from Prince Charles in 1992, it was decided that Diana would lose the title of “Her Royal Highness” which meant that henceforth, she would have to curtsy to everyone in the Royal Family, including her own two sons.

According to some reports, Queen Elizabeth had no problem with Diana retaining her title, but it was Prince Charles who was adamant that she should lose it.

By the way, this is what Princess Diana had to say about Camilla Parker Bowles:

However, in A Royal Duty – a book written by Paul Burrell, Diana’s close friend and butler – Prince William made one very touching promise to his mother soon after the change.

“Don’t worry, Mommy, I will give it back to you one day when I am king,” a 12-year-old William told his beloved mother.

Tragically, just three years after this promise was made, Diana passed away. This, of course, means that the opportunity he might have had to give his mother back her title was suddenly taken away.

It is unclear whether he would be able to posthumously give his mother the title of “Her Royal Highness”, but hopefully, he will try his best to follow through with the very poignant promise.

According to a source for People Magazine, William and Kate often talk about Diana and the wonderful person she was to their kids, and have many pictures of her displayed in their home. There’s no denying that her memory will live on not only within the royal family but amongst ordinary people as well.

“Never being able to say the word ‘Mommy’ again in your life sounds like a small thing. I too have felt — and still feel — the emptiness on such a day as Mother’s Day,” William explained in an interview.

Yes, it’s been over two decades since Diana’s untimely passing but is evident that the love she had for her kids will continue to live on in their hearts.
