For any true sports fan, there are few things more exciting than getting the chance to go to a baseball game. Everything from the smell of the freshly cut grass to the sound of the vendors calling out for people to buy their delicious snacks – usually an overpriced hot dog. If you get the chance to watch your team play in person, you’re simply living the dream.

Before the game has even begun, you get a chance to see your idols jogging and stretching in preparation for the game and that’s when the anticipation really kicks in.

And then when the umpire shouts “play ball!”, every megafan will experience a rush of chills.

From then on, everything seems to go really swiftly as you watch a 95 mph fastball whilst your excitement soars in sync with it.

Of course, there are also the excited chants from the crowd being belted out throughout the day. But the real icing on the cake – aside from seeing your team emerge victorious – is the prospect of catching a ball and taking it home with you.

Imagine being at a big league game, rooting for your team, beer in one hand and then before you know it, there’s an actual, bona fide baseball in the other.

Think about how rare it would be that you, out of everyone, would be the one to catch the ball considering there are at least 35,000 other people in attendance. Also, most fans will be seated in areas where it is highly unlikely that a ball would ever reach them, making the chances that much slimmer.

Plus there’s also the fact when a ball comes into your area, fans will immediately turn from friendly strangers into ruthless warriors as they lunge forward to catch it.

The fight for the ball is almost entertaining as watching the actual game being played as everyone completely disregards their fellow spectators so that they can be the one to catch it.

But surely if a ball was being thrown in your area, headed for a young, excited child, you would do the decent thing and make sure that the kid caught it?

Well, apparently, fans are that ruthless at baseball games that they are willing to end up looking like the kind of person who would take candy from a baby. In fact, this happened recently when an adult fan was seen essentially stealing a ball that was intended for a child.

The incident in question happened during Sunday’s game at Wrigley Field. And the perpetrator? A Cubs fan.

So what happened? Well, first base coach Will Venable threw a baseball to a young fan who was sitting in the first row, but the boy wasn’t able to catch the ball. Instead, it ended up going underneath the seats.

I mean, the lady really should not have kept the ball for herself, thereby withholding it from the child who the ball was clearly intended for.

Luckily, something pretty amazing happened afterward. The Cubs had seen what these particular fans had done and made sure that the boy not only got his hands on his own baseball but in addition to this, he got another ball with Javy Baez’s autograph on it.

The story is a far cry from the one about the guy who made an impressive catch of a foul ball and then walked downwards over the chairs so he could hand it to a kid. That kind of thing really warms your heart, right?

And there are plenty of other cool stories of people catching foul balls, for instance, the legend of a woman who caught a ball in her drink and then chugged the rest of it.

The moral of the story here is: no matter how much of a fan you are, you should do the right thing in the unlikely event that a ball comes flying your way.
