A Girl Who Was Killed 45 Years Ago Has Been Tweeting For Help In Solving Her Own Cold Case

On July 6, 1973, Newport Beach in California should have been full of laughter and joy. After all, it was the middle of the summer. Instead, the only sounds the citizens heard that day, was the buzz of police sirens and people frantically calling out the name of 11-year-old Linda O’Keefe.

The intense search for the missing schoolgirl would continue through the night, before ending abruptly the following morning when her lifeless body was discovered in a ditch just a few miles from her home.

Despite 45 years of investigations, Newport Beach Police have never arrested anyone in connection with Linda’s death. The case went cold, but investigators never gave up hope that they’d one day track down the culprit.

Now, thanks to modern day technology, the investigation is again open. This time there is hope that Linda’s killer will be brought to justice. To help them on their quest for closure on this haunting case, Newport Beach Police took to Twitter to share #LindasStory.

It’s a chilling tale, but a necessary one to share, because it could help find Linda’s murderer who still remains at large after 45 years…

Newport Beach Police have been able to spread #LindasStory to thousands of people across the globe, many of whom are trying to help them solve the chilling cold case.

But, could you help them understand what happened to Linda that day in July 1973? Her story has many clues, they just need to be pieced together…

On the day she disappeared, Linda was also wearing a green ski jacket. She was wearing this jacket when her body was later found.

The police now hope that somebody may recall seeing Linda in her green ski jacket with the man they believe is responsible for her murder…

Before leaving school, Linda visited Richard’s Market where she purchased a stick of gum before running back to the school for the afternoon of lessons.

Of course, being the 1970s, there was nothing concerning about an 11-year-old child being on her own. That was simply the way they did it back then. Thankfully, that is no longer the case.

Linda has begun to become quite “moody” in the months before her murder, leading her parents to believe that she may have run away when she didn’t return home that day.

But the truth is, Linda didn’t run away. She was on her way home, but sadly she’d never make it…

The turquoise van has been a prominent part of the police’s investigation. Yet, despite its distinctive color, the van has never provided any leads.

Of course, you’d have thought a vehicle like that would attract some attention, but this was 1973, a time when vibrant colored vehicles weren’t all too uncommon.

It was at this moment that Linda’s mom began to panic. It is a sensation that all parents fear, and many tragically experience. For Linda’s mom, life as she knew it was about to drastically change.

There was no way for her to know at the time what had happened to her daughter, and initially, she hoped that Linda has just run away in a strop. But, these hopes quickly faded as the time ticked by…

Linda’s sisters both went to sleep that night, convinced that their sister would return home once she’d forgiven their mother for not picking her up from school. At this point, it was inconceivable to them that she’d never ever come home.

Whilst her sisters slept, the police began an intense search for Linda. They hoped that they’d find the little girl and be able to return her to her family. But that dream quickly turned into a nightmare when they got a call…

By this point, it was clear that Linda had not just run away. Her mother knew she wouldn’t stay out at night, and the police had been unable to locate any trace of her despite extensive searches.

But whilst everyone involved knew that Linda was in danger, they never expected to find what they did…

For this man, life was about to throw a cruel curveball. His innocent search for frogs with his four-year-old son would turn into the most horrific moment of his life.

Up until this point, the authorities and Linda’s family had been holding out hope that they’d find the intelligent, pretty schoolgirl. But this discovery changed everything…

It is believed that Linda died at some time around 12 am on the evening on July 6, which is consistent with the story given by the woman living near to the murder scene, who heard female shouts at 11 pm.

The murderer was able to slip away from the scene, where he then fled to freedom. But, Newport Beach Police now hope that he will not be brought to justice thanks to modern DNA technology.

In recent years, several cold cases have been solved thanks to this new type of technology. Hopefully, Linda’s killer will finally be reprimanded for the crime he committed 45 years ago.

It’s haunting to think that this man could currently be living among us. So, hopefully, somebody will have some information about his location.

Newport Beach Police have already thanked the public for their many tips, several of which may be extremely helpful in this case. Could social media help solve a 45-year-old cold case? Let’s hope so!
