18 Jul The Mega-Rich Are Preparing For The End Of The World, So Maybe The Rest Of Us Should Too?
There are numerous apocalyptic theories and there have been presumably since the beginning of humankind. Many of them are rooted in religion which is why so-called preppers (people who actively prepare for the end of the world) are so intent on doing everything they can to ensure their survival in the event of an apocalypse.
After all, the aftermath of the apocalypse in most religious contexts usually involves some form of judgment day, and in the case of Christianity, the second coming of Jesus Christ. So, yeah, it’s a pretty big deal.
Then there are the more secular preppers in society who are probably just, well, a bit too superstitious. The truth is there are preppers from all kinds of different backgrounds, but the most hardcore of all of them are undoubtedly the most well-to-do people in society.
And I’m talking the wealthiest of the wealthy; the billionaires, the absolutely filthy rich. Basically the kind of people who own their own islands, or at least have the means to do so.
As it turns out, rich people will do anything to prevent them from succumbing to the end of the world. From splashing their cash on luxury bunkers to investing in outrageously expensive ‘food buckets’, they won’t let anything, even the apocalypse, stop them from enjoying their privilege.
So without further ado, here are the most insane things wealthy people are doing to prepare themselves for the destruction of the world as we know it.
They’ll have to rely on rabbit droppings
In a post-apocalyptic society, we would have run out of gas needed to power pretty much everything from our vehicles to our stoves. We would need to find a suitable and sustainable alternative. Well, the mega-rich would turn to rabbits, and by ‘rabbits’ I mean rabbit droppings.
In fact, one company is trying to come up with ways to use it for pretty much everything. In short, the rich will use rabbit poo for fuel and the actual rabbits for meat. Considering the rate at which rabbits reproduce, the plan seems full-proof.
They’re preparing from an attack from poor people
The gap between the mega-rich and the average US citizen is getting bigger by the day. Some ultra-wealthy people are concerned that the very pronounced class inequities that exist in our society could potentially lead to hostility and conflict. They fear the poorer members of society will rise up and attack them.
LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman told The New Yorker, “I’ve heard this theme from a bunch of people. Is the country going to turn against the wealthy…? Is it going to turn into civil disorder?”
They’re looking to buy Jim Bakker’s Food buckets

Jim Bakker, a televangelist and convicted felon, is back on the TV and some believe he is still exploiting the fears of his fellow evangelical Christians. So how exactly is he doing this?
Well, he is selling various ‘food buckets’ intended to feed families in case of an Armageddon. The thing is, these food buckets are incredibly expensive (some are as much as $10,000), meaning they’re only available to the well-off. This is what the official website lists as the contents:
“With this special offer you will receive twenty-one (21) Pinto Bean 4 Gallon Buckets, twenty (20) Black Bean 4 Gallon Buckets, twenty seven (27) Rice White Long 6 Gallon Buckets, forty (40) Buttermilk Pancake Mix and Recipe 6 Gallon Buckets, twenty (20) Potato Slices 4 Gallon Buckets, twelve (12) Potato Shreds 4 Gallon Buckets, eight (8) Vegetable Stew Blend 6 Gallon Buckets . Total of 37696 Servings / 148 Buckets.”
Actually sounds alright…
Larry Ellison purchased almost an entire Hawaiian island
Larry Ellison is a billionaire tech entrepreneur and he owns a whopping 98% of the Hawaiian island of Lanai so that he has somewhere to escape if necessary. He also bought the island’s airline.
They’ve built very lavish bunkers

When you think of a ‘bunker’, a dark and dreary underground hole normally comes to mind. But that certainly doesn’t apply to the bunkers that the mega-rich are building in various places around the world. These bunkers contain gyms, pools, and plenty of security.
Helicopters as a means of escape
In the event of an apocalypse, you would naturally want to prepare yourself for a swift escape. That’s why preppers who are wealthy enough to own one rely on helicopters as a means of survival. “I keep a helicopter gassed up all the time,” one wealthy prepper told The New Yorker.
They’re getting surgery
Some wealthy preppers are going down the route of surgery to prepare themselves for a potential apocalypse.
For instance, Steve Huffman, the CEO and cofounder of Reddit, got Lasik surgery, saying “If the world ends (and not even if the world ends) and we have trouble, getting contacts or glasses is going to be a huge pain in the [butt]. Without them, I’m f*cked.”
They’re actually building arks
It turns out arks aren’t just used as a means of survival in the Bible. In fact, some billionaires are buying space in one particularly secure German ark.
According to CNN:
“[The modern-day ark is] carved out of solid bedrock [and it] offers 34 private residences, each starting at 2,500 square feet with the option to add a second story for a total of 5,000 square feet.”
“The units will be delivered empty and each owner will have the space renovated to suit their own tastes and needs, choosing from options that include screening rooms, private pools, and gyms.”
They’re turning to New Zealand
In the eyes of many rich preppers, New Zealand has become the ideal place to turn to in a cataclysmic crisis. That’s because it’s remote and is a self-sufficient nation with a great economy. In fact, Peter Thiel became a New Zealand citizen just days after arriving in the country.
Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn, has spoken about why New Zealand is a go-to place for wealthy survivalists:
“Saying you’re buying a house in New Zealand is kind of a wink, wink, say no more. Once you’ve done the Masonic handshake, they’ll be, like, ‘Oh, you know, I have a broker who sells old ICBM silos, and they’re nuclear-hardened, and they kind of look like they would be interesting to live in.’”
So if you have the means to prepare yourself for the end of the world, then you may want to follow in the footsteps of these rich preppers. But let’s face it, the average person won’t have enough funds to afford a luxury bunker or fancy helicopter, so I guess we’ll just have to accept our fate like the poor f**kers we are.
