16 Jul Meghan Markle’s Father Claims His Daughter Is Terrified And That He Can “See Her Pain In Her Smile”

Meghan Markle has officially been a Royal for barely two months and yet she’s been participating in a whirlwind of Royal activities. It seems she’s hardly had time to relax after her marriage to Prince Harry and has been spotted everywhere from a restaurant in Dublin to courtside at Wimbledon.

Yes, Meghan’s schedule has been jam-packed, going on her first foreign tour, attending a family wedding, a day at Ascot, and her first solo appearance with the Queen in Chester. She recently spent a little time with her sister-in-law Kate Middleton watching the women’s final at Wimbledon.

But while Meghan may have been watching tennis, everyone else’s eyes were on her. Meghan’s jump from American television actress to major global celebrity royal has been fast, and while it would appear to many that she’s living a dream, her father, Thomas Markle says otherwise.

Despite not having contact with his daughter since prior to her wedding, he claims that Meghan is “terrified” and that he can “see her pain in her smile”. Thomas Markle is concerned that Meghan is not adjusting well to Royal life and that she is being stifled by her new in-laws’ strict rules and protocol.

Thomas doesn’t understand the rules his daughter has to follow as a member of the Royal family and believes their way of life is outdated and oppressive. “Why in 2018 are we dressing like the 1930s? Why do they have to cover their knees?” he said in an interview with the Sun.

Thomas Markle may have a point as several news outlets are claiming the Royals have stripped Meghan of her “sparkle”. Gone are the glamorous Hollywood gowns and sexy Suits outfits. Now Meghan always appears much more conservative and toned down.

However, that hasn’t stopped the public from fawning over her recent wedding dresses and several other fashion choices that many would consider classic rather than oppressive. Though it’s more than just Meghan’s new fashion sense that her father is concerned about.

He claims that he hates how the Royals are not allowed to show emotion and that Meghan’s smile lately is forced and “pained”. He says it’s different from the stage smile she uses as an actress and believes that it shows she is unhappy with her new Royal role in life.

“I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face and I see it in her smile. I’ve seen her smile for years. I know her smile. I don’t like the one I’m seeing now. This one isn’t even a stage smile – this is a pained smile,” The 73-year-old explained to the Sun.

He continued, “That might be just having a couple of bad days. I don’t know. It really worries me. I think she’s under too much pressure. There’s a high price to pay to be married to that family.”

While Thomas Markle wanted to clarify that he’s not blaming Harry for Meghan’s perceived unhappiness, this wouldn’t be the first time he’s taken a swipe at his daughter’s in-laws.

He’s previously made controversial statements about the Royal Family, including his wishes that Harry not beat Meghan, which was a request that seemed to come out of nowhere. He also didn’t attend his daughter’s wedding, canceling only hours before the ceremony, citing a health crisis.

However, just days before, he was caught taking staged photographs and selling them to the paparazzi in his hometown of Rosarito, Mexico. Thomas Markle claims he was taking the pictures to improve his image prior to the wedding, but his profit from the shots was offputting.

“Anyone who makes a profit off the Royal Family becomes shunned. But I could have made well over $100,000 by just doing a talk show,” he said. “So if I moved to London and started selling cups with my daughter’s face on, would they shun me? The Royal Family is living by rules that are outdated.”

“Half of Great Britain seems to make a fortune selling pictures of my daughter and her husband. Are they shunned?” Thomas added, who claims he doesn’t understand what all the fuss was about and believes he’s no different than any other father.

According to reports, Meghan hasn’t spoken to her father since she has gotten married and she refuses to answer his calls. Thomas Markle claims he missed her wedding because he was experiencing chest pains and had to undergo heart surgery.

He gave an interview to Good Morning Britain after the ceremony to explain he had watched his daughter walk down the aisle on television and expressed regret that he was unable to be there in person. He claims he texted her to tell her how beautiful she looked but added that speaking now is painful.

“I could actually die soon. Does she want this to be the last thing we’ve said to each other?” Thomas told the Sun about his daughter’s cold shoulder. While many are blaming Thomas’ inability to keep Meghan’s affairs private as the reason for their distancing, Thomas blames Royal pressures.

He believes that Royal customs are “asinine” and that Meghan should have used her skills as an actress to mend the rifts between the two families. Only her mother, Doria Ragland, was present at the wedding to represent Meghan’s family.

Instead of inviting other, extended family members, a slew of Hollywood celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, and David and Victoria Beckham were invited to attend instead. While Thomas understands his daughter has famous friends, he believes her blood family should have received invites, too.
