04 Jul Fishermen Thought They Had Spotted A Stranded Steal, But It Was Something Else Entirely
Being a fisherman is a difficult and treacherous job – and I should know, my dad worked as one in the early 90s. In fact, he was at sea when I was born. Those who go out to sea are often gone for long periods of time, and there’s no telling what they’ll find on the ocean. You might think that the days of pirates are long gone, but my grandpa was a fisherman too and legitimately got chased by gun-wielding bandits in the Caribbean!
However, what three fishermen recently found while working off the coast of Labrador, Canada, was like nothing which had ever been reported on the ocean before. When they were traveling to collect bait and ice for their fishing, they noticed something strange on top of an iceberg…
The first thing which the fishermen noticed was the berg’s peculiar mushroom shape, then realized that there was something sitting on top of it. At first, they assumed that it was a seal or another sea creature, but it turned out to be an animal that definitely didn’t belong on the ocean.
“We thought it was a baby seal,” they said, recounting their incredible find.
However, as the three fishermen inched their way closer to the berg, they realized that it was actually an Arctic fox.
The fishermen knew that if they didn’t intervene, the fox would inevitably die a slow and agonizing death, so they decided to put their own lives at risk to rescue it from the mushroom-shaped berg.
This involved sliding their boat up to its side to try and get the fox onboard.
“We were able to get him aboard even though he fought it,” fisherman Mallory Harrigan said. “We knew we were his only chance for survival, as the winds had changed and were driving all the ice farther out to sea.”
Clearly aware that it was in trouble, the fox must have decided to take its chances with the strange humans instead of staying on the berg any longer.
In an attempt to warm the fox up, the fishermen quickly cobbled together a makeshift bed on their boat and provided the fox with food and water.
They then abandoned their initial plan to get bait and ice and turned around so that the fox could be brought to the safety of dry land.
Now full of Vienna sausages, the fishermen dropped the fox off at an old doghouse.
“We dropped him off in an old doghouse,” they said. “He shook himself off and that was it!”

Even though the fox was now safely back in the wild, it was not the last time that the fishermen saw it…
In response to the heartwarming footage of the release, Facebook user Ruby Wellon wrote, “[It’s] so nice to see [that] there are still compassionate and caring people in the world. [Many] thanks to the crew of this fishing boat. Vienna sausages can be a real life saver some times [sic]!”
Whereas Marie Smith asked how the fox was doing now, writing, “Poor baby. [How] is he?”
To which fisherman Alan Russell replied, “Perfect now we let him go in Williams harbour and still feeding him [sic]!”
Isn’t it great that the fox didn’t forget its rescuers?!
“Nice of u guys might bring u some good luck catching your [crabs],” added William Russell.
“We’re glad to have saved an animal,” Harrigan said, acknowledging the fact that the Arctic fox is now doing well and frequently coming up to the fishermen for more food – presumably sausages. “We can still see him from time to time!”
