From sharp suits to shell suits, top knots to sleek bobs, everyone has their own ‘style’, whether other people always appreciate it or not. Most of us spend longer than we’d really like to admit deliberating over which shirt to buy or which haircut to ask for, trying to make sure our eyeliner flicks at exactly the right angle, and our limbs reach the right shade of tan. In short, we’re a world obsessed with the way that we’re perceived by others.

Having lived in South Korea – often regarded by many as the ‘beauty capital of the world’ – where I attended an all-female university, I’m only too aware of the rigorous processes that some women put themselves through in order to live up to what “conventional” beauty standards. It’s a place where a 10-step skincare process each night is nothing unusual, reapplying your makeup mid-math lesson is par for the course, and there are more beauty products than I even knew existed.

However, there is also a much darker side to this striving for beauty and that’s the idealization of western beauty standards.

Although South Korea leads the world when it comes to the number of people who undergo plastic surgery, the practice is surprisingly common across eastern Asia – with blepharoplasty, where the skin around the eye is restructured to give a more western appearance, being among one of the most requested. By 21, many of my friends had already undergone this procedure.

But that doesn’t mean that surgery is the only way that women are transforming their faces to give themselves a more ‘western’ look. Many also use “sculpturing”, where women alter their features with a little help from less invasive measures including false eyelashes, tape, and fake skin extensions, to achieve their desired look. Now, a video has been released showing women with and without their beauty cheats, as they wipe it all off to reveal their beauty beneath – and some of them are almost completely unrecognizable.

But seriously, those eyebrows seem to have come from nowhere and are totally on point.

And it has so much more character without all the makeup.

Remember when you used to think makeup made you grown up? Well, a combination of clever shading and false hair pieces seem to have made this lady look whole lot younger.

Her eyes seem so much bigger with the makeup and tape on.

In an ideal world, there would be no beauty standards, no self-doubt, no one feeling the need to look like anything other than their normal, totally true self. But unfortunately that’s not the case, so we’ll just have to agree that these women look great with and without the slap, while admitting that they’re quite the talented makeup artists.
