It’s an unfortunate fact that the honest men and women amongst us sort of have to accept that there are fraudsters and con artists who will willingly cheat us out of our hard-earned cash.

One example of a fraudulent activity that motorists need to be particularly wary of is the “crash for cash” scam.

In fact, a UK driver recently captured the moment a man attempted – and miserably failed – to pull off his very own “crash for cash” scam. Thankfully, the driver was equipped with a dashcam, which not only recorded the sheer audacity and ludicrousness of the incident, but also made sure they were safe from any legal issues.

Considering what an epic fail it was the for the fraudster, the resulting footage was absolutely hilarious:

Perhaps not so much for the actual victims of the scam – but at least they were able to leave the incident with some peace of mind.

The dashcam footage shows a British motorcyclist reversing back into a car behind him before intentionally throwing himself onto the hood of the vehicle. “What the hell?” the driver shouts. “You idiot!”

Without a second’s hesitation, the woman confronts the young man and his friend who is filming the “accident” in order to legitimize the insurance fraud.

The two guys reprimand the woman for “running” the man over only for her to knock them down a peg or two by revealing that she has a dashcam that is very much in use.

“I’ve got a camera,” she says. “Do you understand you are on video, you complete idiot?” Clearly in shock that their “master plan” had failed to come to fruition, the pair quickly flee the scene of the incident.

Unfortunately, scams of this nature are becoming increasingly common in the UK and, of course, in other parts of the world.

Earlier this year, in an entirely separate incident, a motorist captured on their dashcam a cyclist deliberately throwing himself onto the ground in front of a car, pretending to be injured.

The clip shows the cyclist riding down the road, before seemingly falling off the bike and laying on the ground.

However, the moment a passenger in the car tells the man that the vehicle is fitted with a dashcam, he suddenly makes a swift recovery, jumps to his feet and starts shouting obscenities at the passenger.

Elizabeth Aspey, who was driving the car, revealed how she reacted during the incident in an interview with Newsflare:

“We were on our way home from Nottingham to Stoke at about 8.30pm, I think. I thought he was just being an idiot in the middle of the road with his bike so I slowed down but then he threw himself on the floor. We had seen a similar video before so I think we both knew what was going on.

“It was just so bizarre because I just felt like things like this don’t happen to us. I just count myself lucky that I wasn’t alone and that I had the dashcam to film it all.”

In the short video, Elizabeth’s boyfriend, Jack Campion, can be heard very calmly informing the cyclist that they know exactly what’s going. “Excuse me, we’ve got a dashcam,” he starts. “You might want to get going.”

“F**k you!” the man replies, before putting up his hood and turning towards the bike.

He then lifts the bike up while heading towards the car and it initially appears that he will throw it at the car in sheer anger. Luckily, he seems to decide against it and simply walks off, dragging his bike along with him.

Hopefully, this little episode served to teach him, and others like him, that crime really doesn’t pay.

But in spite of the fact that people do catch fraudsters on their dashcam, many of them are still willing to try out these scams.

In fact, MoneySuperMarket, a British price comparison website asked all 43 territorial UK police forces how many cases of insurance fraud had been recorded over the last decade, and stats were quite startling.

While only 1,087 cases of motor insurance fraud were reported to the police over the past ten years, the Association of British Insurers recorded 68,000 cases of motor insurance fraud in 2016 alone.

The City of London Police recorded the highest number of frauds with 746 cases, this was followed by West Yorkshire Police and Derbyshire Police.

Kevin Pratt, the consumer affairs expert at MoneySuperMarket, said:

“Motor insurance fraud remains a big problem for drivers in the UK. Although we often hear from insurers about the impact that criminal activity has on car insurance prices, with £50 ($66) per policy being mentioned, these figures show that a surprisingly low amount of incidents are being reported to police forces.”

“This may be because, historically, so-called ‘white collar’ crime has been less of a priority for the police.

And in society in general, insurance companies are often seen as ‘fair game’, creating an impression that insurance fraud is a victimless crime. Whatever the reason, what police forces see is clearly the tip of the iceberg.”

He added: “Ultimately, it’s honest motorists who foot the bill for fraudulent activity because false claims push up the price of annual premiums by around £50 ($66) per motorist.”

“With the average cost of a fully comprehensive policy currently sitting at £508 ($670) a year, now’s a good time to shop around and see if you could be getting a better deal.

If you haven’t switched for a while you could be in line for a substantial saving on your premium, potentially in the region of £280 ($370), so it’s worth the minor effort.”

There’s no denying that being a victim of scams such as these is an immense hassle. That’s why it’s advisable that every motorist invests in a dashcam for their car. It might just come in handy one day.
