Female Reporter Destroys Soccer Fan Who Tried To Kiss Her During Live Broadcast

In 2018, people are far less willing to stand for any form of harassment or unwanted sexual advances than ever before.

Needless to say, the Weinstein scandal was a huge catalyst in this. When news of the scandal broke in October last year, no one could have predicted the domino effect it would have across the entire entertainment industry, sparking many other allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

The movement soon gained traction and started branching out into other industries. It just goes to show that concern for the victims of such harassment is pretty much universal, or at least it should be.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that, as a society we’ve been condemning this kind of misconduct for quite a while now, some people still haven’t gotten the memo.

For instance, one female journalist recently had to scold a soccer fan who tried to kiss her while she was reporting at the World Cup in Russia.

Her name is Julia Guimarães and she is a reporter for TV Globo and SporTV in Brazil. And the incident in question occurred while she was filming to camera ahead of the Japan v Senegal game in Yekaterinburg on Sunday.

While simply doing her job, Guimarães was rudely interrupted by a man who approached her and attempted to kiss her on the cheek but she dodged in time to miss it.

The reporter then reprimanded the man, who she said was Russian, and he quickly retreated before apologizing.

“Don’t do this. Never do this again, okay?” Guimarães tells him. “I’m sorry, sorry, okay, okay,’” he replies away from camera shot.

Guimarães continues: “I don’t allow you to do that, never. Okay? This is not polite. This is not right. Never do this. Never do this to a woman, okay? Respect.”

The journalist later revealed that this was not the first time a soccer fan had tried to kiss her in Russia. “I’m experiencing it a lot in Russia,” she told Globo Esporte, adding that the harassment had ranged from hostile looks to being sung about in Russian in a derogatory manner.

“Which obviously I do not understand, but I feel,” she said. “And it’s the second time something physical has happened, with a guy trying to kiss me.”

“It’s awful. I feel helpless, vulnerable. This time I gave an answer, but it’s sad, people do not understand. I wanted to understand why he thinks he has a right to do that.”

No one should have to feel helpless in a working environment, especially if the reason is in no way work-related.

But that certainly isn’t the first time that a reporter was has been harassed on camera. Just a few days ago, another female sports reporter, Julieth Gonzalez, was approached by a man who kissed her on the cheek, non-consensually, before casually walking off.

The extraordinary thing about this encounter was how Gonzalez dealt with it. She didn’t even flinch; she simply carried on reporting as though nothing had happened.

And then there was the dramatic moment, Maria Fernanda Mora, another sports reporter, was groped by a fan outside a soccer stadium. Shockingly, the reporter reacted to the unwanted advances by beating the offending fan with her microphone!

When the video cuts out, Mora can then be seen looking pretty distressed as she walks away from the camera.

Mora then decided to defend her reaction on Twitter. Recounting the incident, the sports presenter said, “What happened to me at dawn on Thursday, happens to thousands of women every day in public spaces. The difference is that it happened to me during a live link on television and I decided to defend myself. My reaction is what turned the fact into something viral.”

“I thought, It could be an accidental rubbing because of people’s pushing and I kept talking to the camera. This guy, emboldened because I did not react and kept doing my job, put his hand between my buttocks twice more. I decided to defend myself.”

And, of course, it was all captured on camera:

We can only hope that in drawing attention to such instances of harassment, more will be done to combat them in future.
