Akon Unveils His Ambitious Plans To Build A New City In Senegal With His Very Own Currency

Back in, say, 2004, Akon was one of the biggest hip-hop/R&B stars around. He released numerous hit singles from his debut album, Trouble, including ‘Lonely’ and ‘Locked Up’.

He then released his second album, Konvicted, in 2006 and that proved to be even more of a success. A number of the singles on the album, including ‘Smack That’, went on to smash the Billboard charts.

But in the last few years, we haven’t really heard much from the talented musician. So what has he been up to?

Well, believe it or not – Akon has been planning to build a futuristic city in Senegal and base its entire economy on a brand new cryptocurrency which he has named after himself.

The Grammy-nominated artist and producer showcased his ambitious project for the very first time at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

While he was there, he spoke at a panel called “Branding Africa: Blockchain, Entrepreneurship and Empowering the Future”.

He told the audience at the festival that the cryptocurrency he was planning to create, called AKoin, could be “the savior of Africa in many ways” due to how secure it would be.

Similar to Bitcoin, Akoin would function separately from governments and established financial institutions, giving ordinary people more power over their ability to make money.
