With only three weeks of married life behind them, the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex, aka Harry and Megs, should be knee deep in newlywed bliss right now. Having just returned from a luxurious honeymoon in Canada, they’re also settling into their plush new place at Kensington Palace and have a trip to New Zealand to look forward to.

For the meantime though, the task at hand is just to get used to being husband and wife, and this includes getting to know the family better.

Every family has their quirks, and as anyone that’s ever got married – or just had been (un)fortunate enough to live with their partner’s family for any length of time – will know, one of the most tricky tasks when it comes to joining a new clan is learning the ins-and-outs of how to fit in.

And to be fair, that must be an even scarier prospect when the family are – quite literally – as posh as it gets.

For most people, this will mean remembering to buy a certain brand of orange juice or wear a certain type of outfit to Christmas dinner, but when you’re joining the Royal Family there are a few more things to learn.

Not only must you master the family wave, always cover your shoulders (or else the internet will shout at you) and never moan about your new family in public, you’ve also got to remember to curtsy to your significant other’s granny.

After all, she’s not only the family matriarch, she’s the most powerful lady in the whole world and she has a look of steel too.

Fortunately, Kate’s got it nailed by now.

However, you can’t expect the latest addition to the family to have everything nailed straight away. So this weekend, when the new Mr and Mrs attended the Trooping the Colour ceremony to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday, it was understandable that Meghan needed a little instruction here and there.

The day is one of the biggest in the royal calendar and sees military regiments display their flags and march through central London for the monarch’s inspection. Once that’s all done with, members of the Royal Family take horse-drawn carriage rides past well-wishers before gathering on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave to crowds.

As the lady of the moment, the Queen, naturally arrives last, so normally, it’s her that all eyes are on, or, as has been the case in recent years, Prince George or Princess Charlotte. But this year, with the wedding fresh in everyone’s memory, Harry and Meg commanded center stage, whether they wanted to or not.

Keen not to mess up, Meghan turned to her new husband for some last minute advice.

In footage captured by a fan and posted to Instagram, with the royals standing ready and waiting on the balcony for the Queen to arrive. As they do, Meghan is seen discretely asking Harry whether it is time to make the move, whispering: “Do it?”, before Harry bows his head and says: “Now”. Mission accomplished.

It’s not only in public that Meghan will have to remember to curtsy though, as she’ll have to do it every time she sees Queen Elizabeth II in private too.

In a 2008 interview with Majesty magazine, the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Philips, who is the daughter of Princess Anne, admitted that she curtsies “every time” she sees her granny, saying: “The thing with my grandmother is she is still my grandmother and she’s very approachable, but she’s also from an era where that was how it was done.”

Even if Meghan did need a helping hand to get everything right this weekend, it’s likely that she’ll be a dab hand at the whole protocol thing in no time. With a chock-a-block schedule of royal events lined up for this year, including a private train ride with the Queen herself, she’ll have plenty of time to practice.
