Watching your son or daughter graduate from university is a proud milestone in a parent’s life. So after Hanss Mujica from Texas got suspended from his university, his parents were understandably disappointed, especially considering their family had already dealt with tragedy in the recent past.

Mujica’s older brother passed away while he was in his senior year, and he says the look of sadness on his parents’ faces when he left college reminded him of the moment his brother passed.

“The last time I saw that face was when they found out my older brother passed away in a car accident in my senior year in high school. From that moment on, I told myself that I would never do anything to see that look on their face. I would never do anything to ever disappoint them again”, he said.

That’s when Mujica hatched a plan to graduate from college and surprise his parents, but his path was fraught with difficulties and unexpected obstacles. Now, six years later and at the age of 24, Mujica surprized his parents by inviting them to his graduation without them knowing.

Mujica wrote: “They’ve always said that the greatest gift you can ever gift your parents, is the gift of education. I’ve planned for this moment for so long and it finally came.

“Back in high school, I was not the most dedicated student. Yes, I was able to pass my classes, but it was just enough to get by to be able to dance and play sports. In high school, teachers are always on top of you to see if you turned in your work or if you read the assigned book.
