As a mother, you are automatically programmed to spring into action the second a threat is posed against your child. It’s an animalistic reaction that has existed in humans since the days when we were all apes.

So when a gunman approached a group of mothers as they collected their children from a special Mother’s Day event at their school in Sao Paulo, Brazil, it was never going to end well.

With his gun pointed firmly at the group of panic-stricken moms and their offspring, 21-year-old Elivelton Neves Moreira seemed calm and collected as he demanded money.

However, his stunt quickly turned sour when one mom, an off-duty military police officer, drew a gun on the attacker. What she did next has stunned the world…

Katia da Silva Sastre barely had a second to think, but rather than panic at the immediate danger, she was able to stay level-headed and devise a plan.

Pulling out a pistol, the mother aimed it directly at Moreira who then fell to the floor in clear agony. Meanwhile, surrounding parents bundle their children into cars and flee.

Moreira writhed around on the tarmac in pain as the 42-year-old mother casually collected his gun from the middle of the road.

What the footage doesn’t capture is the moment that the emergency services arrive at the scene, carting Moreira off to the hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Despite the “regrettable outcome”, Sastre was honored in a ceremony held by Sao Paulo Governor Márcio França the day after the incident.

According to the Daily Mirror, Sastre has been a police officer for 20 years, which helps to explain her immense bravery in the situation.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the police force provided these details of the incident:

“These criminals lose control easily. Katia didn’t know if he was going to react by shooting at the children, the moms or the headteacher who was at the school entrance. She just thought about defending the parents, the children, herself and her daughter.”
