We change a lot during the early part of our lives. That’s why it’s so fun to look through our baby photographs to see how much we’ve changed over the years, but that’s a luxury that hasn’t been afforded to 23-year-old Manpreet Singh who stopped growing in 1997 before he was two years old.

Manpreet, who is from Hisar, India, was born in 1995, and, at first, he appeared to be a perfectly normal and healthy baby. It was only when he stopped growing at the age of one and weighing a mere 11lbs that his family realized that there was something seriously wrong with him.

Despite technically being a man, the 23-year-old needs round-the-clock care, and to the unsuspecting onlooker, is just like any other child. Becuase of the demands his unusual condition poses, he does not live with his parents but his aunt and uncle.

He is referred to in his village as the “pint-sized man” and his carried everywhere by his 42-year-old aunt, Lakhwinder Kaur.

Manpreet has swollen arms and hands and his face is covered in saggy skin – presumably because it failed to grow correctly. Unable to talk, he communicates through gestures and is able to laugh, scream and cry.

“Manpreet giggles like a toddler and seldom gets sad,” his 45-year-old uncle Karanvir Singh said.

“It’s only when the dogs or any other animal makes a sound, he gets terrified and cries.”

As it stands, the cause of Manpreet’s stunted development remains unknown. Doctors, however, have said that there that he has a hormonal imbalance, and scientists have speculated that he is suffering from a rare condition known as Laron Syndrome.

With only 300 confirmed cases in the world, it involves the absence of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1, or IGF-1, which is necessary for cells to grow.
