When you’re young, you actively seek to fit in with everyone else as best you can. If you want to survive high school without any persistent drama and bullying, you naturally believe that blending in with the crowd is your best bet. However, for some people, this isn’t always a feasible option.

People who were born with certain distinctive features really have no choice in the matter and the exclusion and spitefulness that often follows them around can do a lot of damage to their self-worth.

Marimar Quiroa used to have such little self-confidence that she would insist on hiding her face when she was in public, but now she proudly shows off her beauty to her thousands of online followers.

The 21-year-old California native was born with a facial tumor known as cystic hygroma, a condition that has forced her to communicate with others using sign language.

However, she has now decided that she won’t let anything prevent her from realizing her potential, including her tumor.

She has truly redefined what we see as “classically beautiful” and seeks to emphasize self-love amongst young people

“To me, beauty means to accept yourself for who you are and to ignore what other people tell you,” the young student explained. “You show your beauty how it is, it doesn’t matter if you have a different looking face, accept yourself how you are.”

Her mother, Maria, was completely unaware that her daughter had the condition until after she was born.

“It has affected my mouth since before birth,”Marimar said. “Before, my face and head were bigger and I went through the process of many surgeries over several years to shrink my face and mouth to what you see today.”

“It affects me in several ways. I cannot speak, I breathe through a hole in my throat, I eat through a tube in my stomach and the hearing in my right ear is diminished.”

Since she was very young, Marimar has undergone a number of procedures with the aim of shrinking the size of the tumor.

However, Marimar has now decided to embrace what she was born with and feels much happier for it.

“When I was younger I would talk to myself in the mirror,” she recalled. “I would tell myself I was beautiful. I would encourage myself and list all the things that were good about me and it built my confidence through the years. What I like about makeup and beauty is imagining new looks, especially around the eyes, and showing people they’re beautiful no matter what.”
