An Artist Drew Spongebob as a Real-Life Human and It Will Give You Nightmares

It’s no secret that Spongebob Squarepants and his right hand man Patrick Star have stolen the hearts of many, with their giddy banter, ridiculous shenanigans, and sweet naivety. Laughing at their downfalls comes easily, but the painful things they say and do are always sprinkled with a lightheartedness that usually leaves you loving them a little bit more. I mean, look at those faces…

Some Spongebob fans, however, have come to see these charming characters as a bit more dark than the rest of us. Miguel Vasquez, a 3D artist who chose to create a real-life rendering of Spongebob and Patrick, is one of those people. In his human-like recreation of our two favorite fictional sea creatures, Vasquez skipped the big, twinkling eyes and round, smiling cheeks and opted for a more… sinister rendition. What we are left with is an image that simultaneously shatters our youth and demolishes all that was once pure in our world:

Yep. You can thank Vasquez for using his creativity to provide you with a future full of sleepless nights and nightmares where Who Lives in a Pineapple Under the Sea plays on repeat. For some reason, in his (likely disturbed) mind, Spongebob has protruding bloodshot eyes hanging above a malicious grin. The fact that he’s holding a spatula is true to the plot of the show, which we can admire, however I have a feeling that if this creature were behind the counter at a burger shop I would promptly lose my appetite and give the establishment a very concerned Yelp review. There’s absolutely no way anything good or delicious could come from THIS:

Perhaps even more menacing than the wicked expression on Spongebob’s face is the enormous wrinkled body of his pal, Patrick. This creature looks like if John Cena was a 75-year-old professional mugger who is all too pink in color. His typical big and hopeful eyes have been swapped for… none at all? Perhaps it was a gesture of generosity from Vasquez, as if this creature truly existed it would likely not want to have the ability to look at its own reflection.

So it’s no secret that these are utterly horrifying and that Vasquez has created something that the world can never un-see. There is one hilarious aspect to his speed sculptures though, which is this reference to one of our favorite episodes:

Who could forget Spongebob and Patrick’s infamous trips to Rock Bottom, the terrifying alternative to their lovely hometown of Bikini Bottom. Boarding a bus they believed to be headed for an amusement park called Glove World (hence the glove-themed attire), these two end up in the trenches of eerie Rock Bottom.   For some reason, seeing this image last provides a sense of silliness that lightens the dark images we were first forced to reconcile with. The glove hats and balloons remind us of the playful nature of Spongebob and Patrick’s antics, which are now comedically contrasted with the horrid bodies that are wearing them.

For the large part, Twitter did not react kindly to these renderings, with viewers expressing various levels of disgust, fear, and sorrow:

When asked whether he had any remorse for the horror his artistry has caused amongst the public, Vasquez had the most evil response of all: “That was the plan all along.” WHAT? This guy deserves a gold medal for being a viral pot stirrer, just dropping visual evils on the internet and walking away like it was nothing. Good luck sleeping soundly tonight, folks.
