03 Jul Man Is Charged with Fraud after Pretending to Lose Family Members in the Grenfell Tower Fire
The aftermath of the Grenfell blaze, which claimed the lives of at least 80 people has been truly harrowing to watch. News-story after news-story details the ways in which survivors of the blaze have been seemingly failed by their council, Kensington and Chelsea and we continue to hear about the lives of the people lost in the blaze, including five children from the same secondary school.
The fire reportedly broke out at 1am on Wednesday 14th June. Allegedly starting on the fourth floor, the blaze spread quickly through the 24-storey tower block. Whilst firefighters were able to successfully rescue 65 people from the building, police officials have said that some victims may never be identified as the building was almost completely destroyed. Relatives and friends of the missing have desperately been trying to locate their loved ones by putting out “missing” posters around the area and visiting local hospitals.
But with police officials stating that they do not expect to find anyone else alive, many people are having to come to terms with the prospect that their loved ones perished in the fire. And whilst the disaster has provoked an outpouring of support from all across the world, it appears that one man tried to take advantage of the tragedy to his own financial gain.
