02 Aug 911 Operators Share The Dumbest Calls They’ve Ever Received, And Get Ready To Cringe
Working as a telephone operator for 911 is probably one of the most stressful jobs a person can have; requiring nerves of steel and the ability to work under extreme pressure. People are meant to call 911 or any emergency service hotline only in the most extreme of circumstances: When someone has committed a felony, been gravely injured and needs urgent medical care, or when a fire or damage to a building is about to cause grievous loss of life and limb.
But not ever call made to 911 is quite as dramatic as all that. In fact, a great many people call 911 for assistance with matters that are anything but emergency situations. The Centre for Problem-Oriented Policing estimates that nearly half of all 911 calls are prank calls or non-emergency calls, and their website states: “Callers sometimes phone about an incident … Others call 911 to ask about non-police-related matters (e.g. the time of a football game, the directions to a local event, the exact time of day, or the time of garbage pick-ups).” A recent Reddit thread asked 911 operators about what the dumbest emergency calls were about, and the answers turned out to be pretty hilarious.
1. Snow problem
2. When you’ve got “ambulance service” and “Uber” confused
3. Not a fungi fan
4. Hit and run
5. Oh deer
