Undocumented migration is a hot topic in international politics, with many countries across the world seeking appropriate means of addressing their respective experiences with people seeking a new life within their borders. The Pew Research Centre estimates that around 11.3 million people in the US are undocumented migrants, based on figures from last year. This means the unauthorized immigrant population in the country constitutes around 3.4% of the total population – a slight decrease from 2007 when this figure peaked at 12.2 million or 4% of the total population. Mexicans have consistently made up a significant proportion of this group, overtly due to the proximity between both countries, but this percentage has been declining steadily in recent years. Mexicans only accounted for half of the total undocumented migrant population in 2016. This was the first time in over ten years that they did not make up an outright majority. In contrast, unauthorized migrants from other countries, notably from Asia and Central America have risen between 2009 and 2015.
Different states in the country also face different burdens when it comes to the issue of undocumented migration. From 2009 to 2014, the unauthorized immigrant population decreased in seven states: Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Nevada and South Carolina. In all of them, the decline was due to a decrease in unauthorized immigrants from Mexico. In six states, the unauthorized immigrant population rose over the same time period: Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington. However, over all, six states face the greatest need to address an influx of unauthorized migrants. California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Illinois alone account for 59% of all unauthorized immigrants in the US.
Opinions sharply differ regarding how this issue should be handled but, in the mean time, real people making real journeys – in often treacherous conditions – are being caught up in unauthorized immigration. Eight people, believed to have been seeking to enter the US illegally, were sadly found dead in a truck parked outside Walmart – a stark reminder of the life-threatening situations many undocumented individuals endure in order to gain access to the country.
