20 Jul 7 Of The Best Films Guaranteed To Help Get You Through Your Breakup
If you’ve just gone through a break-up, I know how you’re feeling. Like not leaving bed all day? Like telling all your friends just to piss off for a bit? Like watching all 12 seasons of Two And A Half Men, self-flagellating to the sight of Jon Cryer’s perfectly ovoid head? Oh, not that last one? Guess that’s just me…
In all seriousness, films are a great avenue through which you can rejuvenate your emotional pallet, getting yourself back out there as soon as possible. There are plenty of other lists out there, but the variety in this one will be sure to hit the right note. Whether you fancy a light-hearted comedy, or a soul-purging drama, there will be something for you. They’re also all pretty great films.
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Charlie Kauffman’s time-warping drama about the nature of memory and love will leave you feeling melancholic, but heart-warmed. Central couple Joel and Clementine meet, fall in love, break-up, then try to wipe each other from their respective memories. Just your standard romance then.
Kaufmann’s script is raw, with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet’s performances providing an idiosyncratic face to the drama. Relationships are never straightforward, and this film perfectly exemplifies that. Good or bad, your memories are part of who you are, and they are indispensable.
2. Annie Hall (1977)
Winner of four Academy Awards, Woody Allen’s showpiece film is a must see, heartbroken or not. Much like you may be doing in this exact moment, Allen’s character Alvy Singer examines the rise and fall of his failed relationship. Fear not, it’s not as depressing as it sounds. As you’d expect, Allen’s sharp wit and wry humour is present throughout. Sometimes indulging your neuroticism is good thing.
3. Inside Out (2015)
One of Pixar’s best, Inside Out is a film that is suited to absolutely everybody. If you are a person that has feelings, Inside Out will have something you can take away from it.
When 11 year-old Riley’s world turns upside down after being forcibly relocated to San Francisco, her multiple emotions don’t quite know how to deal with it. Whilst this film isn’t necessarily about a romantic relationship, it is about the human condition, and a great one at that. It is impossible not to feel better after watching Inside Out.
4. Mr. Nobody (2009)
A personal favourite of mine, Mr Nobody is another film that is less relevant for its plot and more so for the overriding message it emanates. Whilst technically considered a sci-fi, the film has an important existential message at its core.
When the oldest man left on Earth (Jared Leto) reflects on his long past and what could have been, multiple narratives emerge. What if you didn’t go to that party? What if you didn’t get on that train? Your relationship was just one realised set of circumstances from an endless amount of possibilities. Head up.
