25 Haunting Photographs Taken Just Before People Tragically Met Their Fate

Death is an inevitable part of life, and most people don’t consider when their mortal coil will come to an end, assuming they’ll be one of the lucky ones and die at a ripe old age, warm in their beds, surrounded by their loved ones.

But the grim reaper can strike at any time. When a friend of mine died at the age of twenty, younger than I was at the time, I was struck with the horrific realization that life really is fragile. Her coffin was a stark reminder of my own mortality.

Here are 25 photographs taken shortly before people lost their lives…

1. The mayor of St. Louis and politicians on board a military glider that crashed in 1943 during a test flight.

The right wing of the glider broke off the moment the towing cable was released. It fell 1,500 feet to the ground and killed everyone on board.

2. Mayinga N’Seka worked as a nurse during the first ebola outbreak in 1976 and she is pictured here on the bed. She died days after this picture was taken.

In the wake of N’Seka’s death, it was incorrectly reported that she was the index case. But she actually caught the virus from a nun who had came to her hospital for treatment.

3. The Concorde Flight 4590 catching fire on take off.

As a result of the fire, the Concorde crashed into a hotel two minutes later, killing all 109 people on board.

4. Actor Paul Walker getting into the car that would kill him.

Roger Rodas tragically crashed the car below into a lamppost, killing himself and Paul Walker. Neither had been under the influence at the time.

It was reported that in 2011, 134,525 people died under the age of 40 in the US alone. Premature deaths are often the result of tragic accidents like the ones depicted in these pictures, but thankfully, such incident are still relatively rare.
