The human imagination is amazing. From the moment we are born, we use it to make our lives more interesting. Some say that our imaginations are at their most vivid when we are children and allowed to spend much of our time playing with toys.

However, the quality of our imaginations often lessen as we grow older. In fact, it’s been said that the creative adult is the child that survived. This certainly makes a lot of sense – the more people practice creative pursuits, the better they become at them.

1. Sometimes we can’t be with the person we love

The Little Mermaid (1989) was my favorite movie as a kid. There was something incredibly fascinating about a girl who was stuck between two worlds. Maybe this woman decided to stare longingly at this whale because she wanted to be under the sea too.

2. Is than an antelope with two heads?!

One of the amazing things about photos is that sometimes they can be taken at just the right time to create something truly mind-boggling. When I saw the bird on a second glance at this photo, I immediately realized why the antelope was pulling such a bizarre expression.

3. That’s such an awesome backpack! Oh wait…

These days, backpacks come in all different shapes and sizes. I can’t help but wonder how this guy felt when he realized what was on his back. I’d have screamed. Let’s just hope that he was able to easily remove the octopus and safely return it to the ocean.

4. All is not what it seems at this music festival

Go on, admit it. You thought that this was an epic rave too. Then you looked closer and realized that the stage was in fact a harvester, and the ravers? Well, they’re nothing more than pieces of corn!

But the human imagination thrives on lot more than just creativity. Even if you didn’t quite see the bizarre goings-on in the above photos, take comfort in the knowledge that every time you remember something or think about the future, you are using your imagination.

5. How to accidentally ruin a cute couple photo…

Some of the funniest fails happen when perfectly innocent things look dirty. If you thought this man’s hand looked like something he probably wouldn’t be showing off in a picture, then it’s safe to say that you’ve not just got a vivid imagination, but a dirty mind too!

6. A dog with human legs

Needless to say, this adorable pooch was not the result of a modern Frankenstein’s experiment. The dog was simply sitting on its owner’s lap in its adorable coat, and, intentional or not, its position and outfit were a pretty good match with their leggings!

7.  Tiny man rides woman like a horse

Had this woman been wearing anything else, this epic photo would have never happened. It’s made all the more hilarious by the fact that the ‘rider’ has such a nonchalant expression – he looks like a gentleman casually riding his noble steed around his estate.

8. It was taken at just the right angle at just the right time

What I love most about this photo is that there would have been absolutely nothing special about it had it not been for its timing and position. It looks like someone has taken it by accident as this woman clearly had no idea that it was happening.

Imaginations are amazing because they’re magical. As children, our imaginations provided us with hours of entertainment. With nothing more than a few household objects, we could entertain ourselves, and, as adults, imaginations can make the mundane a lot more interesting.

9. Don’t worry, this hockey player hasn’t lost his head!

This picture is particularly baffling because even after staring at it, I can’t quite see where the player’s head is. I can only assume that his helmet has slipped off as he bent down, and by sheer chance, someone has taken a photo of it in mid-air.

10. Talk about unfortunate

There’s few things more serious than news reports about conflict. But in a bizarre twist of fate, anyone who tuned into this show at this time would have been forgiven for thinking that a war was about to break out in their news station’s studio.

11. Calm down. It’s just a cherry!

This picture is a great piece of inspiration for anyone who wants to play a brilliant practical joke. Clearly, whoever took it noticed that the cherry made their thumb look like it had just been severed and decided to share it with the world.

12. It’s just a baby’s feet

Talk about a sweet photo suddenly becoming disturbing! But hey, I’m sure this baby and their mom will be able to laugh about it in years to come. If they’re bold enough, it could even make for a hilarious profile picture on social media.

As adults, we have a lot more responsibilities, so it’s inevitable that we’ll use our imaginations less. That’s why it’s important to continue doing activities that give our imaginations a workout – like reading books and even playing role-play games like Dungeons and Dragons.

13. They look like conjoined twins!

If this isn’t a brilliant example of perfect timing, I don’t know what is. So if you and your bestie haven’t uploaded a picture together to social media for a while, you might want to take some inspiration from these guys!

14. I bet she got a fright when she saw this one

Whilst the chances of getting struck by lightening are extremely low, the chances of taking a photograph like this must be even lower. That’s certainly not the expression someone would pull if they’d actually been struck!

15. When an arm looks like a butt…

It took me a good minute of staring to work out what the butt in this picture actually is. If there’s a lesson be learned from this picture, it’s this – don’t go into a drawer whilst your friends are posing for pictures.

16. She should have said “I hoot” instead of “I do”

I think we can all agree that we want to look good in our wedding photographs. They’ll be looked at for years to come, and we’ll share them with our children and grandchildren, so it’s safe to say this couple got very lucky with this one.

It’s been scientifically proven that our imaginations as adults will never be as good as they were when we were children. Kids are able to imagine a world without limitations because they’ve never been exposed to them.

17. Where did his arms go?! 

This picture’s hilarious because looks like this couples’ heads have morphed together. What’s more is that this guy’s arms are completely missing. They probably asked a friend to take a picture of them hugging and got a surprise when they saw the result.

18. A hairy situation

We live in the age of the selfie. I grew up when social media was still in its infancy, and some of my earliest photos of myself are ridiculous. But what makes them so embarrassing is that I thought I looked good, but hey, at least this didn’t happen to me!

19. The accidental mom-to-be!

Pregnancy is one of the beautiful things in the world. However, no one wants to make the faux pas of accidentally asking a woman with a food baby when she’s due, or, as could be the case for this woman, having a photograph uploaded to social media which, on a first glance, makes her look pregnant.

20. Her friend has an extremely powerful sense of smell

I wonder if the photographer realized how epic this snap was going to be as they took it, or if they only realized afterwards. I’ve got a feeling that it was taken by the girl on the right, and she got a shock when she saw how close her nose had came to her friend’s hair.

With added responsibility as adults comes added stress. Our imaginations, however, offer us a much-needed escape from our problems. On days when life gets a bit too serious, a bit of lighthearted homor can be exactly what the doctor ordered…

Even if that means digging out a baby photo where things aren’t quite what they seem.
