02 Aug 17 Of The Greatest Pop Culture Conspiracy Theories To Ever Grace The Internet
Once you become a celebrity, your life will be the topic of conversation between people you have never met, all across the world. Our interest in the lives of these stars often leads us to question everything about them. Are they telling the truth, or are they lying? Are they part of the Illuminati?
Similarly, our obsession with the work they make, and pop culture in general, means that we’re often over-thinking a lot of the entertainment we consume. While a lot of these conversations are a lot of fun, they are often not based in any truth. However, that doesn’t stop people from barreling on with some of the most absurd conspiracy theories that are endlessly fun to read.
1. Beyoncé faked her pregnancy
Beyoncé set the world on fire after she announced she was pregnant at the VMAs in 2011, but it wasn’t long before people started to doubt it was real. An interview on Australian TV where her stomach apparently “folded” as she sat down started up rumours that she had faked the pregnancy, with Blue Ivy actually being born from a surrogate mother.
2. Lorde is older than she claims
In 2013, a group began a conspiracy theory about Lorde’s age. According to the theory, she is a lot older than the 17 years she claimed to be at the time. The theory spread so far it even ended up as the topic of a South Park episode. In 2014, The Hairpin put an end to the rumour by requesting a copy of Lorde’s New Zealand birth certificate. Of course, it confirmed Ella Marijia Lani Yelich-O’Connor was born on November 7 1996.
3. Elvis Presley is alive
While the official record is that the rock and roll star died of a heart attack in 1977, many fans have sworn that he still lives to this day, with even some claiming to have seen him. The theory is that he faked his death to escape his overwhelming fame, changing his name to live in anonymity for the rest of his life.
4. Prince Harry is not Prince Charles’ son
In 1986 two years after Harry was born, Princess Diana began a five-year affair with her horse-riding instructor, James Hewitt. Some believe that Hewitt is actually Harry’s real biological father, and that the relationship started earlier than we have been told. Hewitt and Harry do look alike, but Hewitt has said that the dates of the affair make it impossible for it to be true.
5. Marilyn Monroe was murdered
Her death in 1962 was ruled as a probable suicide based on her history with drugs and mental health issues, but several conspiracy theories have emerged over the years. The primary one that makes the rounds is that it was an assassination attempt orchestrated by the CIA to cover up the scandal of an affair she allegedly had with JFK.
