14 Revolting Facts About The Human Body That Will Leave You Squirming

To say the human body is utterly incredible would be the understatement of the century. And that’s because it has all kinds of impressive functions that work together in order to keep our bodies running as smoothly as possible.

Unfortunately though, modern humans have become highly sensitive over hundreds of years, and tend to be disgusted at the most natural and ultimately beneficial processes that occur in our bodies.

The fact of the matter is, keeping our bodies going requires a whole host of bizarre, unpleasant and just downright revolting processes. But hey, the human body needs all of these functions in order to protect us as best it can. So, don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Here are 14 of the most revolting facts about the human body which may just leave you feeling a little nauseous.

1. The shedding of human skin

If you thought it was just snakes that shed their skin, boy were you wrong! Every hour, humans shed 600,000 skin cells in the form of a tiny, often undetectable dandruff-like substance.

In fact, by the time you reach the age of 70, you will have lost about 105 lbs of your skin over your lifetime. However, your dead skin cells are constantly being replaced with new ones if that’s any consolation.

2. Bacteria in the mouth

There are approximately 700 species of bacteria that live in your mouth. And if that doesn’t sound icky enough, then get a load of this: there are more bacteria living in your mouth than there are people in the world!

According to Ann Wei, a prosthodontist: “In an unbrushed mouth, there can be as many germs as a dirty bathroom floor.” So, remember that the next time you decide to go to bed without brushing your teeth. It’s not as harmless as you think it is.

3. Flatulence – is it worse in men or in women?

Flatulence is at its peak odor twice in a day: five hours after you eat lunch and five hours after you eat dinner.

While this is hardly the shock of the century, what you may be surprised to learn is that women’s flatulence has more hydrogen sulfide meaning that it tends to smell worse than that of their male counterparts. On the flipside, men tend to to produce more flatulence throughout the day.
